Description: 'Ladies' make an exhibition of themselves at Milford The fire damaged Milford Tennis and Squash Club was the scene for an extraordinary ladies charity exhibition tennis match last Saturday. Four of the club's top male players donned wigs, tights and ladies tennis kit for a match with a difference in front of a bumper crowd, who turned out in force despite the awful weather conditions. Maria Sharapova (club coach Russell May), Steffi Graff, Lottie Dodd who last appeared in 1867(Luther Stone)and Billy Jean King (Pete Thorne) treated the spectators to an action packed comedy match with plenty of skilful shots and colourful hosiery on view from the 'ladies'. Sharipova and Graf showed their class and a few other things before emerging as winners 11-9 in a championship tie-break. The event was organised by Jan Caldwell and Russell May and a team of efficient helpers on the night. Over œ2,500 was raised from the combined ticket sales and an auction of promises on the night, all of which will go towards the new clubhouse's interior furnishings. There are still spaces available for a charity ladies doubles tournament at Milford Tennis Club on Thursday September 16th. The event is open to both members and non members with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK. The tournament will start at 9.30am and all pairs will play at least four round robin matches. The event costs œ12.50 per person which includes lunch. For more information contact Lesley Rawson on 01590 644408.
