About the club

Club Address:

Milford Tennis & Squash Club,
Lucerne Road,
Milford on Sea,
Hampshire,
SO41 0PL

Our Club was formed in 1927 using two courts on Milford Recreation Ground. The arrangements were not satisfactory and in 1929 the Club leased two hard courts and the present grounds of one and three quarter acres in Lucerne Road. Two grass courts were laid and a pavilion was built. The Club held its first open tennis tournament in 1929 and joined the LTA in 1935. The pavilion was used by a Bridge section and socially for dances and in 1935 a squash court was built and Squash Club was formed. In 1933 a croquet lawn had been laid but interest fizzled out. A second squash court was added in the 1990’s.

During the Second World Was the clubhouse became a hospital supply depot and was used for many purposes to support the war effort including blood transfusions.

In 1946 the freehold of the site was purchased for £900.

After the was the Club was revived and by 1950 the Club’s tournament had become so popular that up to fifteen courts were used, the Club courts being supplemented by the private courts of the large houses of Milford. In 1952 the Club started playing matches against other clubs and soon obtained its licence to sell alcoholic drinks. The social programme included lectures, barbeques, lunches, dances and mixed hockey matches. The generosity of a club member enabled the clubhouse to be extended in 1969. In 1992 courts 1,2 & 3 were converted from grass to synthetic grass and by 2003 all courts had been converted to provide excellent facilities which include floodlighting on three of the seven courts.

During 2007 the Club undertook a total renovation and expansion of its club house. The total cost of £142,000 funded by the membership. The new facilities comprise new brick ladies & men’s changing rooms & showers, an extended kitchen clubroom and magnificent open plan kitchen. The old wooden building erected in 1929 has been stripped down and rebuilt to provide a dedicated bar, coach’s office, disabled toilet and committee room.

We now provide team matches and club play for both our tennis and squash members with open and internal tournaments and leagues. We have fifteen tennis and four squash teams and provide an active bridge, table tennis, Mah Jong and social programme. Our total club membership exceeds 600.
